Woodland Kingfisher

Title-Woodland Kingfisher
Medium-Oil on Masonite Board
Size-6x6 Inches

This is a common bird here in our garden, and occurs almost throughout Africa. It is normally found in wooded areas near water. However despite being called a kingfisher it does not eat fish but rather feeds on insects. They enjoy sitting on a branch in the semi shade while watching out for any insects that are stupid enough to make a move, once the insect is spotted it will swoop down and grab it.After beating the insect on its perch,to make sure that it has been properly dispatched it will then quickly swallow it.

I love the call and the colorful wing displays that this bird makes during the breeding season, they are quite beautiful.
